Monthly Lectures

Mindfulness and Integrative Medicine Seminar (MIMS)

In collaboration with the Center for the Neurobiology of Stress (CNS) and the Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), we are offering an expanded monthly MIMS Speaker Series for the 2009/10 academic year.

In addition to continuing to offer presentations by cutting-edge Senior Scholars in the area of Mind/Body Health and experiential presentations by Deep Practitioners of Mindful Awareness, the newly expanded MIMS Series will include presentations from Clinicians and Up & Coming Investigators engaged in novel studies in the area of Mindful Awareness and Mind/Body Health.  The aim of this expanded format is to foster the interchange of ideas across the applied and academic communities involved in Mindful Awareness and other areas of Mind/Body Health and to contribute to generating collaborations across campus departments.

In order to deepen our discussions, when possible, we will disseminate articles and other relevant materials prior to the scheduled presentations.  We will also have a 30 minute reception and chat time after each presentation for informal discussions and networking.

The lectures are usually held the last Monday of every month, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon in the UCLA Semel Institute, 740 Westwood Plaza, Room C8-885. These are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Reservations are not required. The Semel Institute is on Westwood, across from UCLA Medical Plaza 100, north of Jules Stein Drive and south of Charles Young Dr. C-Level is street level.
Please note upcoming dates and times.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

NOVEMBER  2009

Speaker:  Lisa Kilpatrick, PhD.
Title:
Date:
Resting State Networks Of The Brain And Health
Monday, November 23, 11AM-12PM (12-1PM optional didactic discussion)
UCLA Semel Institute (NPI), room C8-885

Abstract:

The concept of the default mode network and other resting state networks will be reviewed with an emphasis on the importance of resting state networks in mental health. The functional integrity of resting state networks is emerging as a potential diagnostic tool as dysfunctions of resting state networks have been noted in a number of patient populations. In addition, changes in resting state networks associated with meditation practice may be related to the psychological health benefits of meditation. Resting state data from a pilot study involving mindfulness-based stress reduction trained subjects compared to wait list controls will be presented.

Bio:  Lisa Kilpatrick completed a PhD degree in Biological Sciences from the University of CA, Irvine. Dr. Kilpatrick is part of the neuroimaging and psychophysiology cores at the Center for Neurovisceral Sciences and Women's Health. Her research focuses on the altered central and autonomic nervous system processes in functional pain disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) as well as the potential therapeutic effects of pharmacological and alternative treatments. Current projects include prepulse modulation of the acoustic startle response in IBS, interstitial cystitis, and fibromyalgia patients; the effect of slow-paced breathing on limbic reactivity in IBS patients; and the effect of mindfulness meditation on neural network activity during resting conditions. She is dedicated to exploring sex differences in nervous system processes as an important step towards tailoring therapies to individual neurobiologies.
